Chicago

Chicago’s architecture, steel-frame construction, masonry cladding allowing for large plate-glass windows and spatial aesthetic are famous throughout the world, and later started to influence parallel developments in European Modernism. The Wind City’s high-rise buildings form a logical whole, the reflective glass surfaces, patterns, insane verticals, extraordinary perspectives, the brutal leftovers of industrial structures and the melancholic workaday poetry interested me when I first visited Chicago back in 2007. The realities of Chicago are not as easy to keep up with. It is jumpy, agitated, impatient. Move aside, don’t linger. But I tried to capture something of the ethereal of the city.

My love of Chicago is partly connected to the fact that house music, one of my favourites, was pioneered here by the legendary DJ Frankie Knuckles.
