Deep Sea

You are invited to the opening of the exhibition on Tuesday, April 28th at 5 p.m.

Deep Sea is my first exhibition of sea photo, although I have been photographing the sea since the summer of 1998. Each of the photos at the exhibition have been selected from a large number of shots to represent the concentrate of the message that the exhibition as a whole has to communicate.

“Our spirit of place has two real homes – the forest and the sea,” writes Valdur Mikita. “Sea and forest views are part of the Estonian’s self-image. We share the same thousand-year-old coastal views, the same primeval yearning for the sea, joy and sadness of the sea with our forebears.”

I have given the sea photos printed on textile laconic titles, such as Naissaar (2001), Gulf of Bothnia (2008), Väinameri (2009) and Vilsandi (2011), thereby emphasising their documentary nature.

“Arne Maasik’s sea views present nature and infinity without any sign of humans being present,” is how Heie Treier describes my photos.

The exhibition is accompanied by an Estonian- and English-language catalogue, with an accompanying text by Valdur Mikita. The sound design for the exhibition was created by Fred Jüssi.

The exhibition will be open from 29 April to 24 May 2015.
